Sewing little things

I’m sewing some smaller things for an upcoming Alzheimer’s fundraiser at my workplace. I am the art therapist at an Assisted Living facility with many experiencing Alzhimer’s. Memory loss is a big issue for our community and each year we raise awareness in a myriad of ways. We hold a bake sale and craft sale, for which I have my residents help make things for the table. They love feeling productive with an opportunity to learn some new skills. In the past, we’ve had great success selling lavender pouches. Here are some views of one example made by a resident with Alzheimer’s. She used watercolor pencils, but this year I’ve been able to purchase fabric markers, which should help brighten the focal image. We are gearing up to make lavender pouches like the one here below. We stuffed them with raw rice and lavender buds. They feel heavy and smell lovely.

While those are fun, I couldn’t leave things alone. I’ve become obsessed with some summery sachets. Anything strawberry makes me smile right now. I love how these turned out and am planning to give a few as gifts. Who knows though, they may end up at the fundraiser as well. What do you think of these sachets? They’re bigger than strawberries, but so sweet.

This free pattern is not listed as a sachet from WeAllSew.com, but is listed as a Strawberry pincushion tutorial here. There are a lot of leaves, but I reduced a few of mine for variety and ease. The strawberries can be pin cushions, but I stuffed them with polyester batting and lavender buds. They are very potent, and with a squeeze you can bring out more of the scent. They are so fun to make. I’m looking at all my red scraps with plans for another few of them. Do I need to add a ribbon to these? Would that be helpful? What would you charge for them, if I end up selling them? I just love them enough to maybe keep them to myself.

This next item is something I’m playing with as well. I adore these little fish pouches!! I dipped into faux leather to try these. The zipper pull tails make me so happy. This is not a free pattern. This Bartolo fish pouch pattern can be purchased for $9.00. Check out this great video tutorial from Kiteco.creates that helps you pull it all together. They’re not hard to sew and using faux leather is actually really fun. I am also not sure how much to sell these for…what do you suggest? I only have a few residents that have mastered putting in zippers, so this will be a me project and not something for them.

That’s all I got right now. I’m working on some easier sewing projects with residents. I promise to share when it gets further along. Thanks so much for stopping by.

    • It is. Those on the dementia unit forget what they’ve made, which is sweet. Each time I show them their project, they get excited all over again!!

    • Thanks so much. I gave away a strawberry today. They need ribbons for hanging but I’m definitely going to make more!!!

    • Right?? That tail pull makes the entire thing. I love how they came out. I don’t usually buy patterns, but this one called me.
