Color and Scrappy Strings

Thank you to Joan of MooseStashQuilting.com for the hosting this colorful blog hop. Today is my day for participation. I love how these blog hops keep me inspired and on target to try new things. I am sharing something that I made a few weeks ago. Along with many other quilters, I help sew for Covered In Love, a wonderful charity run by a fabulous nurse out of Texas. This charity donates comfort quilts to families who have loved ones dying in the hospital. Throughout the year volunteers are asked to make particular blocks in colors chosen by Kat, the founder. Those blocks are pulled together into quilts by her and a team of amazing helpers. One recent request was for a scrappy quarter log cabin block.

I made several and then a new idea came into my head. With so many strings in my scrap pile, it was time to use them for using them for something. Why not try to color coordinate the stripes? Here was the result.

An entire quilt top that was created from my numerous scraps.

I really love how this came out. It is scrappy but somewhat organized and the diagonal rows of color are extra fun. Before sewing it all together, the blocks were trimmed to exactly 12 and a half inches. It was easier to make than I expected. The amazing part is that I only started planning for specific blocks once I was about half way through making them. I mailed the quilt top off to Kat and will wait to see how she finishes it off. Isn’t it amazing all the ways one can use strings in a scrappy quilt!!??

I hope you check out the other fabulous colorful projects in this blog hop. There’s even a Pinterest page for all the lovely finishes.

    • I sure hope so. I am sure there will be another one in my future. That strip bin will be filled again in no time!

    • Thanks so much. That sounds nice. The family that gets this will be going through grief from a loss…comfort is what they will need.

  1. Your blocks came together really nicely – I really like the diagonal stripes of colour. And you did a great job of the balance between purposeful colour placement and interspersing other colours and strips.

    • Thank you. I think I would have spent a lot more time with placement on the negative spaces if I had planned ahead. It’s good that I just ran with it because the end result is much more spontaneous and interesting.

    • I do love a bright and cheerful charity quilt. It’s fun making blocks for Kat because I always learn something. Even more fun is using up scraps for a good cause.

    • It was fun. I secretly regret not using more novelty prints but the whole purpose was to use what I already had!!

    • Thank you. If only this really depleted our supplies of scraps. It comes close and then they multiply again.

  4. I really love that you used up your scraps making this. I have just “organized” some scraps and the last step is sorting the strips and scraps into colorways. This idea is a good one for using up those strips!

    • Kathleen, I didn’t even sort much as I went. I just grabbed and sewed along. This quilt wasn’t organized and that may be why I love it so much. I’m sure if I had planned it from the start, I would have been pickier about color placement. Sometimes it’s best to leave things simple.

  5. Scrappy strings are the best!! I started making some all red string blocks and plan to use them for the backing on some holiday table runners.

    • Vicki, That’s a lovely plan. I seem to always have the least amount of red scraps. I’m in the mood for red lately so perhaps that’s why my quilt went to pinks.
