Today is my day for participating in the blog hop called “It’s a Guy Thing.” Thank you Carol (from Justletmequilt.com) for another fun and inspiring blog hop. This time we were asked to make something for the guys. Challenge accepted!!

Albert Einstein was on my mind, so of course, I made a doll for boys. It’s not easy shaping famous figures in fabric, but that I give my best effort. Einstein’s hair is quite challenging because it mostly resembles a mop. I don’t know if I succeeded in recreating it out of old t-shirt fabric strips, but it’s definitely moppy. (Does it look more like dreadlocks maybe? You decide.) I dressed Einstein in a suit with a hint of a white shirt showing on the collar and sleeves. I had to give him a necktie, but what tie would he have actually worn? After doing a bit of research, I was still stumped. I ended up choosing a blue batik fabric with some numbers on it. You can’t really see the numbers well, but trust me…they are there. I like that they remind me of E-MC squared.

How’s this for a wonderful Einstein quote?
“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”
Albert Einstein

Finally, this genius needed a lab coat. I made one that came out too small, but until I redo it…he’s going to have to squeeze into this one. The doll lab coat pattern was too big and long so I reduced it when it was copied. I reduced it to 85% but that was too tiny for Albert. Next time, I’ll try to copy the pattern at maybe 90-93%. The sleeves will need to be shortened either way. The length was long like a full licensed doctor wears instead of those shorter ones that students get. I gave Albert a shorter coat because i like to show his skinny legs.

The pattern for this doll is the same one I used for my RBG doll, which is a rag doll pattern from Tatadolls on Etsy. Once again, I’ve made some adaptations to the pattern, but the original isn’t that different from mine. I hope to make him a lab coat but you never know…fuzzy slippers could show up as well!

Here’s another quote from the man (or the doll…you decide.)
“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”
Albert Einstein
I had planned to make my 2nd doll Frida Kahlo but Einstein showed up instead. I promise to keep you posted if any other famous dolls turn up on my doorstop.
Please check out the other guy projects on the hop. Comments are encouraged and very much appreciated.

Thanks so much. I ordered some plain white fabric to make him another, more roomy lab coat. Turns out that I have every color of fabric except pure white.

Oh I do like Einstein. I think your version is just the perfect representation of him. I’d have known him anywhere with or without his lab coat 😉

Thank you Carol. I need to make him a different lab coat (with pockets etc.) but hopefully one that actually fits.

Love all the touches for your Einstein doll. The tee shirt hair did give him more of a dreadlock look, but still looks great. Maybe you could have used a fuzzy eyelash yarn for his hair? An idea for a future Einstein or doll that needs fuzzy hair. Thanks for sharing and Frida should be amazing too.

Daryl, I didn’t even think of fuzzy eyebrows, which your comment reminds me about. I could have used yarn but I am using a pattern that calls for t-shirt strips and I was sticking to the original. For sure there are furry fabrics etc..that could work for Albert. You have given me a lot to think about.
