Snakes and Pecan Squares

Welcome to the Virtual Cookie Blog Hop. Thank you to Carol at Just Let Me Quilt for another fantastic blog hop!! I am going to share a fun project that makes a great kid’s gift and an outstanding cookie recipe (technically they’re called squares… but close enough.)

Do you like scrappy projects like I do??? Here is a snake that is a blast to make and even more fun to play with. It’s a wonderful gift for a young kid, but I made one for my adult son for his 21st birthday!! (Don’t think that’s all he got!?? We also gave him an ice cream maker, but a snake to twist and curl up with is never bad. It was suggested to me that I tape a can of beer in the snake’s mouth, since it was his 21st birthday. But who are we kidding? My son has definitely had beer before now, plus I wouldn’t know where to begin buying beer for him!

Here’s my son’s new snake. When untwisted, this slithery guy is actually taller than my 5’3″ height. You can make it shorter if you want, but why bother when there are soooo many scraps to work with!!?

The pattern for this Silly Scrap Snake cost $12.99, which I know is a fortune!! I am usually quite a cheapskate and only look at free patterns, but this one had me at hello. I justified buying it by telling myself that I’m helping a small business stay afloat during Covid. It all helps! The snake head has a mouth that opens and the body is made with 10 scrappy pieces of fabric around 6 x 8″ each. The eyes can be embroidered but I preferred two large buttons for snake eyes. Just sew those buttons on before stuffing your guy. The instructions say to leave 3 holes open for stuffing but I left 4, and that was a better way to go. I know for most people it’s a lot of money for just a pattern, so if you prefer a freebie pattern, I also listed some FREE snake patterns here as well.

  • FOR AN ALTERNATIVE FREE SNAKE PATTERN, CHECK OUT THESE 3 OPTIONS.
  • 1) A Mustachioed Snake pattern using striped socks sewn together.
  • 2) Or this Bendable Snake pattern with a matching book idea. This snake includes an internal wire that allows it to pose and wrap on things.
  • 3) Or this Open-Mouthed Snake Tutorial that has the fun wide mouth but unfortunately, is written in German but there’s a step by step photo layout. It looks like an easy and free snake pattern.

My residents at work made several of these for their great-grandchildren as Chanukah gifts. Some of our ladies have also discovered that snakes make great toys to hit one another with!! Yup, a few of us had a snake fight (think Star Wars laser wands and you get the picture.) For those few wacky moments in this pandemic period of angst, it was a a breath of fresh air to be playful kids again!! Check out their snakes below (the green eyed one wasn’t stuffed yet when the photo was taken.)

Here are snakes being held by two of my residents. Both ladies are 94 years old by the way, and still proudly sewing !!

NOW ONTO SOME NUTTY PECAN SQUARES!!

Bourbon Pecan Pie Bars for Thanksgiving and Holidays

My cookie recipe is really a pecan square. They are a family favorite. Even when I burn them, (yes, it has happened,) they still are gobbled up! I sometimes make these for Thanksgiving, but this year was less involved, as we all know. These squares taste like Pecan Pie, but are much easier to make and serve. I bake them in advance and freeze them in tightly sealed containers with wax paper between the squares. I will usually thaw them out the night before. They can last for several weeks but beware, they taste good right out of the freezer!! The crazy thing is that I’m now allergic to nuts and can’t taste them anymore, but I still enjoy making them for my family. Trust me when I say, these have always been a hit whenever and wherever I serve them. Enjoy trying them yourself.

Thank you for stopping by and reading this quickie blog post. Please check out all the other yummy cookies and fun projects in this blog hop. Leave a comment if you can!!

    • If I was more clever, perhaps I would have tried that. This year, I’m just lucky I came up with meaningful gifts for him!!

  1. Merry Christmas! I think that a snake fight sounds like wonderful fun, LOL. And the pecan squares are delicious; back when the boys were living at home and consuming mass quantities of sweets I made lots of cookies and goodies for Christmas. Not so much now.

    • It’s hard to bake when we know it will end up on our own thighs, right!? Yes, the snake fight was a blast and these days, we may need another one soon. thanks so much for stopping by and leaving sweet comments. I hope next year your home may be filled with lots of people to eat all your yummy baked goods!!

    • My pleasure. I had so much fun making him. You’re now reminding me that i have a friend who asked me to make a pink/purple one for her granddaughter. Off to make another snake. I’ve got pumpkin chocolate chip loaves in the oven. Next year I’ll share that recipe.

    • You are so sweet. I can tell you this…your family will love the pecan squares. As for the snake, I may love it more than my son at the moment but that’s ok!!!

    • Just to be clear, I am no snake person at all!! I just love this idea of wrapping a fabric one around and playing with it.

  2. Oh, I love nuts with pecans being my second favorite. Goodness, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve become allergic to them…what would I do?? The bars sound yummy and less stressful than pie, I say. What a good way to use scraps; your son will treasure his new snake.

    • I used to miss eating nuts but no longer. Peanut butter was rough but it’s not an option so one has to adapt. I highly recommend making the bars. You will get rave reviews!! thanks so much for stopping by.

  3. I must admit…when I even see the word snake, I cringe and usually close the page. But there was something about your snakes! LOL!! What silly fun little guys they are. 🙂 Better yet was that recipe for the pecan squares. They are right up my hubby’s alley. Thanks for sharing both. You’ve made my day!

    • Joan you made my day now!!! I also don’t like real snakes. When my 5 boys wanted pets i had one rule, “nothing that needs to eat live food.” So a snake was never coming into my house and instead we had fish, hermit crabs, too many guinea pigs to count…and a dog!!

  4. I have that snake pattern but haven’t made it yet. Now I want to! I love how cute it is and that there was a “snake fight.” Too funny! Pecan bars are a favorite of mine (along with dozens of other cookies)…I need to make these! Thank you for sharing your snakes and pecan squares. xo

    • You are so welcome!! If you have issues with the pattern, feel free to message me. On the last snake we made I did sew the mouth sides closed a bit so that it didn’t open as wide. It did seem to be more of a smiling guy that way. Either way you make it, they are a blast. I forgot to mention that one of my residents added scrap denim to some of the body pieces and another used old purple corduroy fabric. Those both added some fun texture. Enjoy those pecan squares and just watch that you don’t over bake them.

  5. Love the snakes and yes – it’s great to support small business this time of year. What an angel you are to give those ladies sewing projects. I can’t imagine living without sewing. Your cookie recipe will be a must-try for me for sure.

    • Carla, we are on quarantine at work again so no sewing can happen at the moment. I miss it and they had big plans for the remainder of the month. Oh well, that’s just another side effect of Covid. We take it seriously with our high-risk population but still, I would love to have helped them make one more snake each. The pecan squares are truly loved by my family. They can easily become your family favorite as well!!

    • wendy, I am sure my brother had a snake that he won at a carnival. My own boys had one that our dog devoured when she was a puppy. I won’t let her anywhere near my scrappy snake for that reason!!

  6. Gosh, those snakes are darn cute. I think they would be a hit with my littles – literally. I can totally see two of them having a snake fight. HAHA! A little stress relief is always welcome. ~smile~ Roseanne

    • Roseanne, the snakes are the best scrap buster I’ve found yet. I made my son’s extra long but you can really adapt the pattern in any way you like. I read that one lady reduced the size of the pattern for a more slim snake. Either way you go, there’s bound to be a lot of fun for everyone involved!!

  7. Fun use of scraps! I could made several at least with scraps and the bags of stuffing that I have. I need to get back to making my snippet monsters.
