From The Heart Blog Hop

I LOVE A BLOG HOP AND THIS ONE WAS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!! The “rules” of this blog hop were to make a small gift to give someone. You know I can do that!!! I found a perfect project to give away.
Here is the knitting needle roll neatly tied up.

Thank you Carol of justletmequilt.com for this week’s great blog hop!!

About a month ago, I looked for a knitting needle holder to keep my supplies organized. I made a simple one, but didn’t love it. I decided to make a more detailed one for a friend who, like me, just began knitting. There are several patterns for knitting needle rolls, but the one I liked most had the most pockets.

This FREE needle holder pattern is called Snazzy Knitting Needle Case and was designed by Melissa Burt. You can find it on the Connecting Threads site. I chose some Tula Pink fabric along with other pink fabrics for a bright pink and orange combo. The pattern was easy to follow and naturally, I altered it a bit. That flap on the left below was meant to be a button closure.

For the largest pocket (D), rather than attach the bottom of the seam, I left it open to allow taller knitting needles to be stored. That top pink pocket is the tallest one, and the bottom seam is left undone, allowing the needles to go all the way through to the bottom of the bag.
Above those long pockets, I added an extra roof piece in order to keep the needles from falling out. Here you can see the Kaffe Fassett fabric that I chose for the little flap piece on the top inside of the bag.
I added velcro to each of the circular knitting needle pockets to keep them from falling out.
The circular needle pockets were the most confusing part of the pattern. I managed to figure it out, but the second time will be so much easier. They are accordion-like and can be flipped over for easier access.

The bottom pockets hold crochet needles, a knitting gauge and of course, scissors.
This little zipper, on the top right corner of the holder, wasn’t my finest construction but it will be perfect to store cable hooks and stitch markers.
This is the gift in the hands of my friend. That flap was meant to have a button closure but I would recommend velcro instead. Of course, I missed both!! Tip for next time: add the velcro before you join the front and back!!

I am grateful that my friend allowed me to include her photo here on my blog! She just completed her second knitted scarf and is ticked pink to have mastered this new skill. Know anyone who knits?? This might just be a perfect gift for them as well!

Summary of my alterations to the original Snazzy Knitting Needle Case:

  1. Use velcro instead of a button closure but add it before adding any pockets.) make the tallest pocket go all the way through to the bottom of the roll,
  2. Make the tallest pocket go all the way through to the bottom of the roll,
  3. Add a roof/flap piece above the needle pockets to keep everything tidy.
  4. Add velcro to each of the circular needle flaps

  1. What a great gift for any knitter. Thanks for taking some of the thinking out of it for the rest of us, who might tackle the project. It’s always nice to have the inside scoop before we start on it. I for one might just have to make one for myself!

    • It’s a great gift for a knitter. Now, who knows how much stuff each knitter has!?? I bet they could fill more than one!!

  2. What a lovely gift and she looks very pleased with your efforts (so don’t beat yourself up over little oops).

    • I actually smiled when I realized my mistake…it’s fairly typical. The pattern was good but not perfect. I can’t design patterns but surely….I can find the flaws!!!! LOL

  3. Just a quick note to thank you for sharing. I’m not a knitter, but have a dear friend that LOVES it, so maybe one day I will make one for her.

  4. I don’t knit, but this could also be used for crochet hooks I suppose!! Thanks for sharing. Great idea!

    • Brenda, it would be great for crochet hooks, but you wouldn’t need as many pockets at all. I would recommend finding a pattern with less stuff on it, or even better make up your own.

    • Thanks. I made one for myself first but didn’t like it. Turned out that was all the research needed to find a better and improved pattern. Now I need to make myself another one!!

  5. Nice gift suggestion. Your bag with adaptations and recommendations is great idea for knitting friends. I also appreciate the link to the pattern.

    • Leah, I also loved the circular needle pockets. That was the reason I went with this pattern. The velcro helps keep the cables of those needles from slipping out. It’s working so far but let’s hope I can make myself another one for the newest interchangeable circular needle set that I just bought!

  6. I don’t knit, but I could see several ways to use this as a travel bag for a quilt retreat. It’s both beautiful and versatile…love it! Thank you for sharing and thanks to your friend for being a good sport and posing!

    • Yes, this would be a great retreat bag. I would add a zippered pocket to the backside and another zippered pocket to replace some of those needle sleeves. All those personal touches would be so helpful.

    • Charlene, this would be a great gift for any knitter (or crocheter). It really wasn’t hard to make and can be easily customized. I’m sure there will be more made in my future.

    • Right!?? Those closures are tricky. I liked this pattern but the steps weren’t quite clear enough for my simple brain. I won’t be as clueless the second time!!

  9. I know this is a hop about heart felt gifts to give but I think I might have to make one for me first. You know, test the pattern. Thanks for sharing and congrats to your friend on her finish.

    • Selina, go for it!! You won’t be sorry if you do make one to keep for yourself. Feel free to reach out with any questions. I would recommend measuring your longest needles and laying out the pieces with pins before sewing things down. Just a little extra work to be sure it will all fit as you want.

    • Lynn, most knitters keep things all over the place. I’m sure one roll won’t be enough once I truly embrace this new craft. However, for now, I want to make one of these for my needles.

    • Who knew I could find another hobby that needs more stuff!!?? What fun that I now buy more gadgets, right!?? Seriously, I’ve been loving my hobo bag that’s my new favorite “take-everywhere” knitting bag. Aneedle holder is the obvious next step!

    • Thanks. The pattern as is was lovely but didn’t fit the longest knitting needles. I also saw the need for a “roof” piece to keep them from falling out. Ask me how I figured that alteration out!!?

    • Carol, I always like to add some notes for others. You never know if someone will attempt the same pattern, but just in case, it’s good to learn from someone else’s experiences.
