It’s been too long since I did a blog hop but happily, I’m back again with projects and a giveaway. Today is my day for the Stitching Sunshine Blog Hop run by Creatin’ in the Sticks. Stay tuned til the end of my post for details on the giveaway!! I love a group challenge to get the creative juices flowing. Something sunny and yellow is so needed right now. The world seems chaotic and gloomy so let’s bring on some yellow to brighten things up!
I dipped into my scraps for some golden colors and lucky me, there were plenty to choose from. I’m very much into scrap quilts these days and this was a fun finish. I pieced together thirteen 16-patch squares and then made twelve low-volume snowballs. I alternated the squares and the snowballs for a simple design. I enjoy seeing some fun fabrics peeking through, like those little pink and orange pandas.
Unfortunately, the wavy quilting that I chose to do doesn’t thrill me in the end. I feel that the wavy lines take away from the design grid that was in place. I know when it’s washed and used, it will be soft and cuddly. So that’s what really matters, right!? If I only owned a long arm, then I could have done a fancy design in each snowball and a stitch in the ditch for the grids. Could I have done that anyways, yes but…this was a quick finish and like we say, “finished is better than perfect.”

The reason this was a quick finish is because I had promised the blanket to Amy for one of her special clients. This “doll” quilt was made for a young girl getting a A Doll Like Me. Amy makes dolls for kids (and adults) who have limb differences and other unique features. Sadly, the little girl getting this doll has suffered disfiguring burns in a house fire. She has had more than her share of challenges. Just look at Amy’s incredibly detailed doll below and you get the idea. A sunny quilt is just what was needed to tag along with such a special doll. I frequently make clothing for A Doll Like Me, but every now and then, something additional is needed. This was one of those times. This quilt is a roomier size than just for a doll and can easily be used for a little girl to cuddle alongside her buddy.

You know that I love making doll clothes for Amy’s 18″ dolls so one pair of capris wasn’t enough. Naturally, I made a dress also.

I loved the sunshine concept so much that one yellow blanket wasn’t enough for me. I made a second quilt that began without an idea in my head. I created 10.5″ crumb blocks from yellow scraps (with some pink and purple thrown in for fun.) I enjoyed making these and using up some of my little novelty yellow scraps along the way. I looked through the internet (yes, we all do that) and found some ideas. Now, with a very controlled and sashed nine-patch border, the quilt came together. Sometimes those quilts that aren’t planned end up as the best finishes. I love how the sashes keep the chaos in check. I may just do another one of these some day.
Nope, I haven’t quilted this one yet. I need to think about it and plot this one out ahead of time. Til then…I’m enjoying looking at the quilt top as is. I’m going to call this one, “SUNSHINE THROUGH the WINDOW”. I hope to finish it one day, but I’m enjoying just looking at it for now.

Awww! Your quilt is perfect for the doll Amy has made. I have some quilts to send her, and some hospital gowns awaiting binding. After this weekend, masks are required in all stores, so I’m just biding my time, thinking if everyone is wearing a masks and I just pop in and out real fast, I’ll feel comfortable enough. Texas is scary right now.

I’m so sorry it’s gotten bad in Texas. I grew up in L.A. and my parents are still there. I’m not happy that the virus is growing there as well. I order all my fabric online so no stores for me. I actually prefer this method but I do miss a good JoAnns run for notions. Please share your doll quilts when you finish some. Thanks for stopping by cause it’s great to stay in touch with you. Stay well.

A Doll Like Me is the brainchild of my friend Amy J. Check out her facebook page for more information. She custom makes each doll with exact details to match the little client. Many of her “kids” have missing limbs and other differences since birth. Amy aims to see that every child can have a doll that looks like them. I just occasionally sew clothing for her but she’s the owner and creator behind A Doll Like Me.

Susan, Scraps are my addiction indeed~! Art therapy is a fascinating field. Sadly, jobs aren’t that easy to come by but I’ve been fortunate thus far. For me, it feels more like a calling than anything else. I feel I was born to do this. Amy of A Doll Like Me is a wonderful person who thoroughly has found her calling as well. Roseanne, thanks so much. I know that Amy still has many doll quilts but I’m trying to finish some baby quilts for Jack’s Basket. If only I had a long arm, I could probably give them 6 right now!! The life of a quilter is that we never complete all our projects but I really need to do some giving away. Amy’s dolls keep calling me and I will never stop making items for them.

Vicki, I”m sure the doll will bring such joy to that little girl. The blanket and clothing is nice, but it’s the doll that takes on a persona and place of friendship.
