Yesterday, I began another sewing class with 1st and 2nd graders. These eager kids began with a simple project to make a key fob to attach to their backpacks. I wanted a simple task get them started on the sewing machine using straight stitches. In addition, I wanted this to be a simple, one-session project that could go home right away. I have 4 students and one assistant, the amazing 5th grade Rafi, who is now a sewing veteran. He helped set up a brand new machine, used pinking shears with the younger kids as well helped to rethread machines. Here are the results of our project. Without parent approval, I can’t show the faces of the children, but they all begged me to take their photos and so here they are.
Looks like we need to do a lesson about snipping threads, but look at this great pivoting and straight stitching !!!
